The Post Breakup Wardrobe & Finding Your Style
When you become single again, your relationship isn’t the only change that happens.
Your living arrangements, hobbies, friends circle and general lifestyle can change when you go through a break-up. One thing that often doesn’t change, but needs to – is your wardrobe. In this post, I’ll share with you my tips for refreshing your look and feeling confident in your sense of style.
Three Things To Do That Will Lift Your Style & Make You Feel Better.
DECLUTTER THE EX PURCHASES
Sometimes when I’m helping new clients, particularly recently single ones, I’m asked ‘Are you Crazy, Stupid, Loving me?’ and my answer is always yes. I love that movie, particularly the makeover scene which I’ve linked below.
If you have no idea what I’m talking about, Crazy, Stupid, Love is a romantic comedy featuring Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Julianne Moore, about a husband who is struggling to get over his wife who cheated on him. It’s definitely worth the watch, if not for the comedy aspect, for the fashion.
When the breakup first happens, sometimes you just need to get away from all of the reminders of that person you loved. You might go visit a friend or family member, or take yourself on a mini-getaway, or you might not have time for either of those things and just have to get back into the swing of things like work, but there’s one thing every morning that will serve as a reminder that you can nip in the bud today. Clothing.
If you’ve got clothing in your wardrobe that your ex got for you, it’s time to remove it. Bag up the items, take them to a charity shop and give your wardrobe a good clean. If you can’t bear to part with them, pack them away and keep them out of your wardrobe. This will help you to feel refreshed and like you can finally start working on the style you want.
Before you take the jump, just consider if this is going to leave you with nothing in your wardrobe. If so, remove the ones that have the most emotion attached to them and hold on to the rest until you have the time and funds to replace them.
GROOMING
There’s nothing vain about self-care, so get into the habit of looking after yourself. This means taking care of your skin, hair and body. Don’t forget the little things like toes and fingernails, when you eventually break back into the dating world, claw-like toenails, dry heels and dry hands aren’t a good look.
Book yourself in for three sessions, one, a hair cut, including your beard if you have one. Don’t go for the same old thing, try something new to give you a nice change. Ask your hair stylist what products to use and how to use them so you don’t just have good hair days on the days you leave the salon.
The second session should be booked with a nail salon. If you’re male, don’t feel weird about going, it’s relaxing to have a manicure and pedicure. All they’ll do is help remove dead skin, give your hands and feet a refresh and get those nails under control.
Number three is an appointment with a skin specialist for a facial. They’ll teach you about what products to use on your skin on a daily basis, like sunscreen and moisturiser for your skin type, and you’ll walk out of the salon feeling and looking brighter and fresher.
If it’s been a while since your makeup routine has had a shakeup, perhaps it’s time it did. You can book in for Tech-Nights at MAC Cosmetics which are makeup workshop nights that help teach you new ways to wear your makeup. You could also book in for a private lesson with a makeup artist to update the way you do your makeup, curate that collection stowed away in your makeup bag and teach you how to do that perfect winged liner.
STYLE
Your lifestyle has changed, you’re probably exercising and going out more than you used to, so your wardrobe needs to reflect that. Get yourself acquainted with a good blog or Pinterest and find a style that excites you. Get clothes that fit properly and if you need it, a personal stylist. A Personal Stylist, like myself, or one in your area, will help you find a style that reflects you, works with your lifestyle and fits like a dream.
The good thing about updating your wardrobe is that you won’t have to rely on what your old partner helped you buy, and you won’t be walking around in things you purchased to make them happy – you’ll be dressing for your own self-confidence.
